Title: Is this the Season opener?
Post by: Piscatorial Pursuit on September 15, 2013, 06:07:38 PM
Finally had a chance to get out again this afternoon, after having two attempts at mid week sojurns dashed for various reasons. Despite the trickle that was dished up as todays tides, I was confident & eager of finding the bream on the chew. That confidence waned early as I didn’t even see a bream early in the piece. The steady & constant stream of solid juvenile salmon helped keep the enthusiasm up.

Making my way up the channel I spied what looked like another school of salmon. I cast the Zipbaits Rigge 46SP-MDR in their direction but rather than turn & climb all over it, they continued on. HUH??? I think to myself, how strange! I continue working the lure in the belief that the school is no long gone. With the bright sunshine the shade was where the fish wanted to be so this was the area I was working, when out of the blue I spot the school of fish again and the lure gets some attention. Tap tap, tap tap, I strike and the rod loads up beautifully, but rather than a burst of speed from the adversary on the other end I get a bullocking stalemate with lots of head shakes. It’s a bream I say to myself and as I drew it closer to the boat I realised it was a good one too, measuring 33cm.
The school was very mobile and I must have spooked them with that fish because I couldn’t find another from there. I did however manage a few more fish between 29 & 34cm as well as a few firsts before deciding I would call it a day.

On leaving I decided that I would work one last area. The bank looked great with just enough water over the top to have the fish cruising along its drop off, but not yet have them get over.  Cast here cast there, nothing. Then I was awoken from a daze by the rod loading up & the Daiwas drag singing. I’d win an inch and the fish would take it back each time getting heart stoppingly close to the structure from where it came. I used the electric to help put some distance between it & its home. The size of this fish was better than anything I had seen today let alone caught from here and once in the net I called it for a 40cm fish straight away. A few quick photos & a measure before release showed that it was over that mark by no more than 2mm!

That was meant to be my last cast for the day, but I fiqured I just needed to put in another. Just in case! Sure enough the Ghost Ebi Zipbaits Rigge 46SP-MDR was slammed again. The tussle was not much unlike that of its earlier predecessor, but when finally in view I could see that it wasn’t & when measured it only stretched to 34cm. Strange how some fish punch well above their weight like that huh?

Well with that I just had to fire in some more casts, but alas that was all there was so with the shadows lengthening and a long ride back to the ramp the siren was sounded and the game closed. I powered away over a glassy sea thinking, FINALLY, spring has broken & so too has the shut down of winter breaming.

I can live with them when fishing hardbodies, to a point mind, but when fishing plastic........ AHHHHH!
Luckily we don't seem to have them in the same proportions as our western cousins.
Damn good to be getting amongst them again however.

well done ! Its amazing how in certain rivers just on 2nd day of Spring the fish started coming on. Been a miserable winter, so the fish were obviously over it as well. Some areas like Harbour City Melbourne still slow.
